Kilroy is embracing WELL Certifications and Health-Safety Ratings, a performance-based system for measuring, certifying, and monitoring features of the built environment that impact the health, safety, and happiness of our partners. Being WELL Health-Safety Rated, Sunset Media Center has achieved recognition on the following six health-safety themes:

Fitwel Certification

We are excited to announce that Sunset Media Center has achieved Fitwel certification, administered by the Center for Active Design. The Fitwel certification system, which rates the extent to which an existing building promotes positive health outcomes for occupants, was created as a joint initiative led by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the General Services Administration (GSA) in addition to experts in public health and design over a five-year process completed in 2015. The features that helped Sunset Media Center achieve Fitwel certification at the 2 star level include: a healing garden, high Walk Score™, green cleaning programs, open stairwells, comprehensive emergency preparedness programs and access to water.

Sustainable Purchasing

Kilroy Realty understands the significant role material selection plays in the operation of a sustainable building. Throughout a material’s lifecycle, extraction, processing, transportation, use and disposal, there are many negative health & environmental consequences. At least 40% of the cost of electronics and appliances purchased are ENERGY STAR® certified. Green Cleaning

Kilroy Realty has always used the most advanced green cleaning products and practices in all of our buildings. We are constantly searching for the latest information and technology on green cleaning and update our cleaning services whenever we see an opportunity to further minimize the environmental impact of our custodial practices. Some examples of our methods include utilizing sustainable green cleaning products and equipment, optimizing the use and maintenance of entryway systems to reduce the amount of foreign matter tracked into the building, and incorporating environmental safety and health training for all janitorial cleaning personnel.

Recycling

Our goal is to divert 55% of our landfill waste to recycling and/or compost by the end of 2020. A higher diversion rate is great for the environment and it lowers our refuse bill – a savings that’s ultimately passed back to you. Sunset Media Center is currently at an 52% diversion rate, so we’ll need everyone’s participation to boost that up to 55%!

Integrated Pest Management

Pest control is an important strategy for maintaining IAQ because both pests (for example, mice) and pesticides
can cause health problems. The building strives to minimize pesticide use and utilize non-chemical options

Indoor Air Quality

Optimal indoor air quality is vital to good health and cognitive function. We at Kilroy Realty recognize this and as such, have a robust building health program that promotes and verifies great indoor air quality (IAQ). You can find our full IAQ policy here.
